Welcome to the Home Page of NDOC. If you are interested in birds and birdwatching, why not join us?
Newbury District Ornithological Club (NDOC) was founded in 1959 with the aim of promoting interest in birds and all aspects of their behaviour and habitats. Today the Club has a membership of around 90 and is open to all, expert or novice, with beginners particularly encouraged. Visitors are always welcome at Club events.
Field visits are arranged throughout the year, with small friendly groups visiting local sites in West Berkshire and neighbouring counties, looking for particular species at known regular spots and visiting the many varied habitats we are lucky to have in our area. We make day excursions further afield, and weekend or longer stays are arranged to more distant areas. In recent years regular birding holidays have been taken abroad to, for example, Poland, the Republic of Georgia and Eastern Turkey.
Experienced members are always on hand to pass on tips and help with identification and regular events are specifically arranged for help with, for instance, bird song and wildfowl ID.
During the winter months, evening meetings are held each month in Newbury, when invited speakers, many of whom are top ornithologists and photographers, talk on a variety of bird topics. Occasional social events are also held, where members can mix in a relaxed atmosphere for conversation and an exchange of news and ideas.
